THE AESTHETIC OF THE HUMAN-MADE ENVIRONMENT
The paintings of Lidija Nikčević seem like photo-sequences of clearly determined and recognisable urban areas in her own surroundings. Through a specific framing of simple, ordinary situations in an exterior setting, where the human figure has the status of an equal narrative element in relation to the entire scenography, she creates the impression of a close and somewhat disturbing atmosphere of mundaneness and profanity. Through the painting procedure of overlapping and merging flat, rigid chromatic surfaces, the flatness of the picture is further emphasized, thereby making the scenes appear even more convincing in the artistic sense and far more visually strong. The narrative background of her paintings can be found in American poetry and cinematography of the second half of the 20th century, but also in distinctly subjective impressions and perceptions of modern life, which time and again actualise the feelings of human alienation and isolation.
